What Is Cost-Per-Wear and How to Use It

The one formula that fixes clothes shopping: price divided by realistic total wears. How to estimate honestly, the category benchmarks, and the three traps that fool the math.

The short answer

Cost-per-wear (CPW) = price ÷ total realistic wears. A $480 blazer worn six times a month for five years costs $1.33 per wear; a $60 impulse shirt worn four times costs $15. Under $2/wear is investment territory; $2–6 is reasonable; above $6 is an expense. The formula only works with honest wear estimates.

The formula

Divide the price by the number of times you will realistically wear it across its life. That single division reframes every purchase: the sticker stops being the cost, and frequency becomes the asset. Under $2 per wear is investment territory — daily-rotation pieces like good trousers, white sneakers and a navy blazer live here effortlessly. $2–6 is reasonable for genuinely useful but less frequent pieces — the wedding-grade poplin shirt, the winter coat. Above $6 demands an honest question: is this a garment or a souvenir?

The three traps

The aspiration trap: estimating wears for the life you plan, not the life you have. If you attend one gala a year, the tuxedo’s denominator is one. The sale trap: a discount lowers the numerator but does nothing for a denominator of zero — a bargain you don’t wear has infinite CPW. The durability trap: cheap pieces that die young have secretly high CPW; a $45 tee that survives twelve wears costs more per wear than a $220 blazer. Does CPW justify any expensive purchase?
No — it justifies expensive things you'll genuinely wear constantly. It's equally good at exposing costly pieces with no occasion attached.
Should I include care costs?
