How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe on $1,500
A complete 20-piece men's capsule on a $1,500 budget: the exact allocation, the buying order, where to spend vs save, and the cost-per-wear math behind every line.
Twenty pieces, $1,500, everything combines: one great unstructured blazer ($220), 3 shirts ($150), 4 tees ($100), 2 trousers + 1 chino ($260), 1 dark denim ($90), 1 overshirt ($90), knitwear ($120), loafers ($180), white sneakers ($110), and $180 held back for tailoring, belts and socks — the line everyone skips and regrets.
The allocation
| Category | Pieces | Budget | The logic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unstructured navy blazer | 1 | $220 | The multiplier — turns every other line dressier |
| Shirts (white + blue oxford, one poplin) | 3 | $150 | Collar quality over pattern |
| White + grey tees | 4 | $100 | Rotation is what keeps them white |
| Tailored trousers (grey) + chinos (stone) | 3 | $260 | The workhorses — spend here |
| Dark raw denim | 1 | $90 | Improves with age; lowest CPW in the closet |
| Overshirt (olive or navy) | 1 | $90 | The third layer that isn’t a hoodie |
| Merino crewneck + cardigan | 2 | $120 | Merino: warm, packable, odor-resistant |
| Suede or leather loafers | 1 | $180 | The “smart” in smart casual |
| Minimal white sneakers | 1 | $110 | The “casual” in it |
| Belt, socks, tailoring reserve | — | $180 | $50 of tailoring beats $200 of extra clothes |
Total: 20 pieces, $1,500 — every top works with every bottom.
This allocation isn’t aspirational math — it prices out. In July 2026 we built the entire basket from named products at list prices, no sale luck required: about $1,118 for the clothing lines against their $1,320 of budget, the tailoring reserve untouched. Every line, source and check date is in the receipts at the bottom of this page.
The buying order (this matters more than the list)
Month 1: trousers, denim, tees, sneakers — the daily engine. Month 2: shirts, loafers, belt, tailoring on what you bought. Month 3: blazer, overshirt, knitwear.
Buying in this order means you’re fully dressed from week one and never panic-buy. It also spreads the spend — and lets end-of-season sales shave 20–30% off months 2–3.
Where to spend vs where to save
Spend on what touches your shoulders and feet: the blazer’s shoulder fit and the shoes’ construction are visible at ten meters. Save on tees, chinos and the overshirt — at this level, fit and care matter more than the label. The single highest-return line in the whole table is the $180 reserve: hemmed trousers and shortened sleeves are what make a $1,500 wardrobe read like a $5,000 one. Check any purchase against the cost-per-wear calculator before it goes in the basket.
