Measure your wrist, then match: under 16.5cm wrists wear 36–39mm cases best; 16.5–18.5cm wrists suit 38–41mm; larger wrists carry 40–43mm. But lug-to-lug — the case's total vertical span — matters more than diameter: it should not exceed your wrist's flat width. The four numbers that matter

Diameter is the headline number but the least decisive. Lug-to-lug — tip to tip of the strap horns — decides whether a watch fits, because lugs overhanging the wrist’s edge is the one unfixable size failure. Thickness decides formality: under ~12mm disappears under a shirt cuff; over 14mm is a sports statement. Lug width decides your strap life: 20mm is the universal standard with endless options; odd widths (19, 21, 23mm) quietly tax you forever.

The try-on test, in ten seconds

Lugs inside the wrist’s flat top — pass or fail, nothing else overrides it. Then the cuff test if you wear shirts: the watch should slide under, not fight through.
