The Fall Capsule: 18 Pieces, Fully Costed
The complete fall wardrobe on one page: the 18-piece list with budget allocation, what carries over from summer, the three fall-only additions worth buying, and the buying order.
A complete fall capsule is 18 pieces, and 12 of them carry over from a well-built summer wardrobe. The six fall moves: swap linen for flannel and oxford shirts, add one merino crewneck and one heavier cardigan or shawl knit, bring in dark raw denim, one field or chore jacket, one pair of welted boots, and wool trousers. Budget the additions at $600–700; the blazer, chinos, tees and loafers you already own do the rest.
What carries over (the whole point of a capsule)
If you built the $1,500 capsule, twelve pieces walk straight into fall: the navy blazer, all the tees, the oxford shirts, chinos, tailored trousers, dark denim, loafers, sneakers, belt and the merino crewneck. Fall isn’t a new wardrobe — it’s a six-piece adjustment layer. That’s what makes the seasonal cost so low.
The six fall additions
| Addition | Budget | Why it earns the line |
|---|---|---|
| Flannel or brushed-cotton shirt ×2 | $110 | The fall texture — works solo or as a light layer |
| Heavier knit (shawl cardigan or chunky crew) | $130 | The third layer that replaces the summer overshirt |
| Field / chore jacket (olive or navy) | $160 | The outerwear workhorse from 18°C down to 8°C |
| Welted boots (brown, plain or cap toe) | $200 | Rain-proof, resoleable, dressier than any sneaker |
| Wool trousers (charcoal or brown) | $100 | Warmth the chinos can’t offer after October |
| Total | $700 | Twelve carry-overs + six additions = 18 pieces |
The buying order
September: boots and the flannels — the pieces the weather forces first. October: the heavy knit and the field jacket, exactly when early-season sales start. November: the wool trousers, timed with pre-Black-Friday pricing. Never buy fall clothes in July at full price; the calendar is a discount if you let it be.
The rules don’t change
Every addition must pass the same two tests as the summer capsule: it pairs with at least five pieces you already own, and it survives the cost-per-wear math. Fall’s advantage is frequency — a $200 boot worn four times a week from October to April lands under $0.50 a wear by its second season.
